What’s a mobile crib?

Mobile cribs were invented by Alexander Calder in the 1930s and have evolved to include various shapes and music. Black and white pictures can stimulate vision development, and mobiles should be placed out of reach. Once a child can sit up, mobiles should be removed or transformed into toys. Look for longer music playtime and remote control options.

The furniture can be defined as a sculpture in motion, and it is thought that Alexander Calder, a well-known American artist, invented them in 1931 or 1932. Early furniture did not necessarily move, as most crib furniture does today. Some were wind-powered and others motor-driven. The modern mobile crib is usually powered by an attached motor and tends to rotate in circles to the beat of lively or peaceful music.

Today, the mobile crib comes in many forms, usually varying more based on the type of shapes used. Many people prefer animals or things like clowns and there are even some mobiles with licensed characters like Winnie the Pooh. The typical crib mobile attaches to the railing of a crib and has winding music that can also vary. Many music choices are lullabies, although music associated with licensed characters can also be used.

Many people wish that the crib mobile could keep babies interested and satisfied for a few moments. Some children fall asleep after looking intently at a cell phone, even though the child’s ability to see the cell phone may be quite limited at first. Some suggest using black and white pictures or drawings as these color contrasts are usually the first to be noticed by babies and may be more helpful in stimulating vision development.

You can really choose any mobile you like and rest assured that most of the kids find them fascinating. They should be placed on a side of the crib that is well out of reach of the baby. If your child sleeps with one side rail down, it may be too low for the mobile. Some can even be attached to the headboards or footboards of cribs which is safer.

Once a child begins to sit up or is able to perfect a few seconds of standing supported by the sides of the crib, the mobiles should be stowed away. Strings that attach to cute visual characters or interesting shapes can prove dangerous. Some mobiles have the ability to transform into fun toys for children when they can no longer be used on the crib. You can cut animals or shapes out of the strings, or untie them and let your child play with them. You should only do this if the items on your phone are safe for choking and intended for children to play with.

One thing you may want to look for is the length of time the music plays. Some modern cellphones can be controlled remotely instead of a simple charging option. They can also be complex in offering different types of movement. These will typically be a little more expensive, but may appeal to the child for longer.
