A music tutor teaches voice and instrument lessons, focusing on rhythm, pitch, tempo, melody, music history, music theory, and phrasing. They also teach students to read and write tablature and musical notes, and proper technique for holding and playing instruments. Breathing properly when singing and instilling proper pitch are also important components of tutoring.

A music tutor is a music teacher who typically operates out of a student’s home or private studio. Teaching voice and instrument lessons, the music tutor educates the student on rhythm, pitch, and tempo. Other areas such as melody and music history are usually taught by a music tutor. The tutor is usually able to hear tonal imperfections and can critique methods of correcting the problem. Music theory and phrasing are also taught to students to aid in their ability to create musical and melodic sounds.

One of the most important jobs of the music tutor is to teach the student to read and write tablature and musical notes. Once a student gains the ability to read music, they are easily transposed from instrument to instrument as they master the ability to play new instruments. Mechanical devices such as the metronome help the music teacher teach students about rhythm and timing. Occasionally, a teacher will equip a student with a wooden block and a drumstick; the student is instructed to practice striking the wooden block with the stick on each tick of the metronome. This teaching method is used to instill musical counting in the student’s subconscious.

An important component of voice training and singing lessons is the ability to breathe properly when singing. The music tutor will often assign lessons and breathing instructions to a student in an attempt to increase the student’s ability to take notes. Convincing the student to breathe through the diaphragm is one of the most difficult tasks for some tutors. Other aspects of tutoring a student vocalist include proper mouth shape and formation when making a particular sound, timing, and tremolo volume control. Some tutors spend weeks teaching the student the proper method for changing the volume of the voice when singing alone or with musical accompaniment.

When teaching students to play an instrument, proper technique for holding and playing the instrument is vital to success. In most cases, manual dexterity must be taught to music students so that both hands are able to master the playing techniques of a specific instrument. Proper pitch is one of the most difficult tasks for a music tutor to instil in a student. On most musical instruments, tempo, melody, and rhythm can be taught to virtually all students; however, the sound is in the musician’s ear, and most of the time, it either exists or it doesn’t.
