A differential pair amplifier can easily be modified to become a phase divider amplifier. The original purpose of a differential pair amplifier is to ensure that the output is proportional to the difference between the voltage of the two inputs. To steer the amplifier towards the splitting stages, a common source must be used which supplies a constant amount of power for both inputs. This will ensure that the total current from both inputs is held constant, such that if one input increases in voltage, the other must necessarily decrease in voltage. Voltage compensation leads to the production of opposing phases, characteristic of a typical phase divider.

One of the least complicated ways to manufacture a phase divider is to use a transformer. Normally, a transformer is used to convert one voltage to another voltage. This technology is exploited to divide currents by using two secondary windings to induce voltage, instead of that used in a typical transformer. The new phase splitter transformer now produces two currents from two separate inputs.

There are two main practical uses for phase dividers. In the manufacturing industry, these devices are used to control the speed of electric motors in all types of industrial machines. In the musical instrument industry, these devices are used to amplify the power of electrical audio equipment. They are particularly sought after for their energy saving capabilities.
