Scrollbars are a common feature in electronic devices, allowing users to navigate through documents and programs. They are part of the graphical user interface and can be customized in appearance. Scrollbars are found in software, internet browsers, and electronic devices such as cell phones and media players.

The scrollbar has long been a staple in many electronic programs. This object allows individuals to interact with a technology-based device such as a computer with greater ease and convenience. Scrolling or scanning electronically through a program or document is the main job of the scroll bar.
A popular system of technology known as the graphical user interface (GUI) uses scroll bars as one of its features. The GUI helps people control content on computers or similar devices through the use of a small pointing object such as a computer mouse that connects to or is installed in the device. This object manifests itself as a graph such as a line or a finger on an electronic screen. The mobile graphics can then interact with other graphical objects presented on the screen and then perform actions. Such objects used to manipulate or control information are known as widgets and the scrollbar is one example.

In a typical computer program, a scrollbar often appears as a long bar structure on the side or bottom of a screen. The bar typically contains arrows at both ends. Inside the bar is a smaller bar that controls how far an individual is from the end of a document. A scrollbar can also contain additional arrows or similar graphical elements. The overall look of scrollbars can vary across programs, and some programs even allow people to change the aesthetic appearance of the scrollbar.

When an individual uses a pointing image to press the arrows on scroll bars, this action allows an individual to scroll forward or backward through a document. A horizontal scroll bar makes it easier to scroll or scan a document from left to right or right to left. Users can also scroll through a document by holding down the smaller bar of the scroll bar and dragging it up or down.

Since most electronic screens are relatively small, they cannot contain the entire contents of a document. Scrollbars then offer access to the entire electronic document. If the scrollbar contains additional arrow squares or other objects, these graphics are usually present so that a user can get to the beginning or end of a document more quickly. Because scrollbars are used to navigate through a document, they differ from a similar-looking object called a cursor. The latter is mainly used to change numerical values in a document.

Scrollbars are found in many electronic outlets. Computer software ranging from word processing programs to games often have a scroll bar as an important feature. Likewise, most internet browsing systems have scroll bars to ensure that visiting websites is easier. Cell phones, some calculators, and media players such as digital video recorders and digital music players may also contain scroll bars. Therefore, many types of content are guided by an electronic scrollbar, including text, images and videos.
