An apprentice locksmith works under the supervision of a licensed locksmith, performing tasks such as making keys, opening locks, installing security systems, and refurbishing old locks and safes. They are often responsible for more menial tasks and are closely supervised when performing more complex tasks.
An apprentice locksmith does everything a locksmith does, but the apprentice simply does it under the watchful eye of a locksmith. Making keys, opening stuck locks and even drilling safes to open them are activities carried out by the apprentice locksmith. In addition to opening locked vehicles and locking keyless locks, apprentice locksmiths often make calls to homes and businesses to install door locks, as well as install alarm systems, safes and security boxes. Sometimes the apprentice is tasked with repairing and refurbishing old safes and door lock mechanisms, and occasionally will be asked to provide records and information about the company’s locks and security systems.
In most areas, it is necessary to apprentice a locksmith for a period of time to become a licensed locksmith. Generally, the apprentice locksmith is given some of the more random tasks in the office, such as cutting duplicate keys for clients and restocking shelves with supplies. Duties such as cleaning the shop and moving service vehicle are also often assigned to the apprentice. More detailed and dexterous tasks, such as opening a safe with a drill or stethoscope placed next to the combination dial, are closely supervised by the locksmith.
When a call comes in to the shop to report a locked vehicle that requires opening, the locksmith apprentice is usually the one who goes to the scene and unlocks the vehicle. Often, the apprentice uses a typical opening device such as a Slim Jim, and other times doors require a more experienced method of releasing the lock, such as picking the lock cups. Installing security locks and even deadbolts on a home or business is usually assigned to the apprentice. Alarm systems are often installed with the locksmith apprentice assisting the locksmith and even making detailed drawings of the system to be used as future reference materials for both the locksmith and building owners.
Sometimes an old safe or lockbox is brought into the locksmith’s office, along with a request to refinish and restore the item. Often, the combination or safe key is not available to open the door, requiring the apprentice locksmith to open the door by drilling the lock, picking the lock, or even cutting the hinge pins with a torch. Once opened, the apprentice locksmith will install or rebuild the lock and perfect the safe to look as good as new.
