Electronics technicians repair and develop electronic systems, products, and components. They can work in various industries and may specialize in subfields of electronics. They typically have good learning ability, eyesight, and communication skills. They usually attend an associate degree program and may seek certification.

An electronics technician repairs home or business electronics, such as televisions, computers, or radios. In addition, electronics technicians work with engineers and help develop electronic systems, components, or products. For example, the work done by electronics technicians may involve using computer design techniques to create models so that products can be analyzed for flaws that are dangerous to consumers. An electronics technician also does safety checks to ensure that project plans are workable under various types of conditions.

An electronics technician can sometimes perform tasks such as product representation, electronic device design, and systems management. Technical sales is another area an electronics technician might look into. Additionally, an electronics technician can work in a variety of work environments such as telecommunications, aeronautics, medicine, military, government, hospitals, engineering consulting firms, the transportation industry, manufacturers, or utility companies.

Typically, those who become electronics technicians have good learning ability as they learn to repair many different electronics. Also, they usually have good eyesight and color vision because they need to see the various parts of the electronic systems they work on clearly. In addition, they generally have good listening and communication skills because they are in constant interaction with consumers and engineers.

As electronics technicians gain work experience, they may eventually choose to hold supervisory positions. Or they may plan to start their own electronics repair business. On the other hand, in some cases, they may choose to go back to school to earn a bachelor’s or higher degree in engineering and spend the rest of their career working as a professional engineer.

At the beginning of their training, individuals who want to become electronics technicians usually attend a specialized associate degree program in electrical engineering technology or electronics engineering technology. The associate degree usually requires courses and an internship. Also, upon completion of the required academic work, for some jobs, electronics technicians tend to seek certification.

For example, electronics technicians often obtain certification through organizations such as the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), the International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET), or the International Association of Schools of Communication and Electronics (ACES). It is important to note that some electronics technicians may choose to specialize in industrial electronics, while others may choose to specialize in other subfields of electronics. Electronics technicians generally work for a period of two years as part of their certification.
