Bodycombat is a non-combat music and cardio workout that draws from multiple martial arts disciplines including karate, kickboxing, Tae Kwon Do, Tai Chi and Muay Thai. Although drawn from these various forms, it is not necessary to know them to begin learning Bodycombat.

Each exercise session lasts approximately one hour and generally must be performed at participating gyms by certified Les Mills instructors. Every three months a new module is released to certified teachers, using new choreography; This helps keep the routine fresh and serves to prevent overwork of muscle groups. New music tracks are also included with each release and add variety to the show. Once instructors are trained on the new module, they in turn teach the workout to gym participants.

Typically set to ten tracks of the latest upbeat music, the moves are choreographed, repetitive, and relatively easy to master, regardless of the athlete’s range of familiarity with martial arts moves. Increasing or decreasing the range and acceleration of the movement can help control the intensity of the exercise, giving the participant the ability to regulate the level of energy expended.

Bodycombat is a full body workout. Each class is typically divided into ten routines, beginning with an upper body warmup that can teach jabs, hooks, and uppercuts; the warmup session also commonly includes a lower body warmup that focuses on various kicks. Once students warm up, the session intensifies and may include punching and kicking combinations, which help tone and shape key muscle groups, improving core strength and stability. As exercise increases, cardiovascular exercise burns calories at a rapid rate, which is generally recognized as beneficial for cardiovascular health and lung capacity. The cool-down section uses elements of Tai-Chi, using smooth, flowing movements to stretch hard-working muscles and relax the body and mind. This exercise is not only a vigorous exercise routine, but it can also help reduce stress and increase self-confidence.

Bodycombat was founded by Les Mills, a native of New Zealand. Leslie “Les” Roy Mills is a retired athlete from New Zealand, who represented New Zealand at the Olympic Games in the 1950s, ’60s and early ’70s. He competed in events such as the shot put, discus, and powerlifting. In 1966 he achieved a gold medal in discus. After retiring from active competition, he became a gym owner and developed various music fitness programs. He also served as the Mayor of Auckland from 1990 to 1998.
