The Tempe Arts Festival is held twice a year in downtown Tempe, Arizona. This large street fair historically features over 400 artists in different mediums. There’s also live music, street performers, and free crafts for kids. Artists compete for the best artist in each category and for the best artist overall.

For three days each fall and spring, downtown Tempe floods with more than 200,000 artists, musicians, vendors and spectators. The Tempe Arts Festival runs from morning to sunset, regardless of the weather. Admission is free and a percentage of the proceeds are donated to local charities.

Before the festival, a committee selects just over 400 artists from 1,000 applications. Each booth must feature handmade artwork of some sort, and the artist must manage the booth himself, discussing the products with customers. Many types of artwork are featured at the Tempe Arts Festival, including wood, metal, jewelry, and photography.

Each artist is entered in the competition in a specific category. A committee judges artists on the quality of their work, presentation, and how they engage with clients. Prizes are then awarded for the best artist in each category and the overall best artist for the entire festival. Winners will receive cash prizes and diplomas to be displayed on their stands for the remainder of the festival.

During the Tempe Arts Festival, local musicians perform in many genres, including folk music, classic rock and jazz. Some musicians perform on one of the stages set up in different areas of the festival, while others play their music between the booths. Magicians, palm readers, caricature artists, and others also entertain attendees during the festival.

At the Festival Food Court, visitors can choose a meal from several stands, serving items from a multitude of ethnicities. Additionally, drink and snack stalls are scattered throughout the festival offering soft drinks, lemonade and tea. A children’s area, the Kids Innovation Station, offers free crafts and activities for elementary and preschoolers. Inside, kids choose from several activities like sun print photography or hat making; afterwards, the finished product can be taken home.

The Tempe Arts Festival is also home to the Arizona Wine Festival and the Art of Beer. The vineyards and microbreweries of each are all based in Arizona. Visitors can purchase a ticket for tastings or purchase wine or beer by the glass, case, or keg.
