What’s wire rope?

Wire rope is a strong, weather-resistant lifting cable made up of small metal strands twisted together. It can be made of steel or iron and is used in various applications, such as lifting silos and moving pallets. It is important to choose the correct type of rope for each application to ensure safety.

Wire rope is a heavy, tensile-strength, weather-resistant lifting cable made up of many small metal strands coiled and twisted together. You can get a lot of strength and flex from this type of rope because the separate strands equalize pressure throughout the deck and work well with the pulleys. It is located on a modern farm, a fishing boat and an international dock.

Typically, wire rope consists of steel strands arranged in series around a central core. This design allows the entire wire to hold a lot of weight and still remain ductile. The individual strands are wound into a bundle called a strand. Several of these wires, perhaps six or nine, are then arranged into an even larger bunch called a wire that surrounds a central core, the sheath.

The wire rope can be made of steel or iron. Most types for outdoor use are zinc plated so they won’t rust from corrosion. Wire that has not been galvanized is called “bright”. Other types are available with alloys that add various benefits. Wire rope can usually be maintained with cleaning and lubrication to ensure it remains compatible and secure with the rigging hardware.

Some characteristics of wire rope are diameter, resistance to breakage, resistance to corrosion, difficulty of flattening or crushing, ability to bend and average service life. For each application of pulleys, chains and weights, an industrial engineer must determine the correct type of rope. Only that size, weight, and rope braid can be used to ensure it doesn’t fray or snap.

People use wire rope to protect forests, unload imported goods, or deliver raw food. Farmers use it to lift entire silos of grain. Firefighters scooping water from lakes to drop it on the flames must strap the shovel to the helicopter. In major ports, both docking ships and land-based vehicles need it in the rigging to move giant pallets.

The most important aspect of wire rope is how it will perform under the stress of each application. In many uses, it supports giant, heavy objects, and if it fails, lives could be in danger. Always know the breaking strength of your rope, and unless you’re a professional, don’t use it in a way that could potentially injure someone.
