The United States Army Special Forces, or Green Berets as they are known, are an elite military force that supports various American targets overseas. They are active on every continent in a diverse range of capacities and are widely regarded as one of the finest military organizations in the world, with only the best of the military serving in the unit.

Officially, the Special Forces was founded in 1952, but in reality, some form of the group had existed since the Civil War, when Northern soldiers helped train Southern resisters who wanted to participate in the war effort. Operations similar to those performed by modern forces also occurred during World War I and World War II, when Army soldiers helped train and equip insurgents who supported the Allies.

The mission of the Special Forces is quite complex and very large in scope. Essentially, the Green Berets specialize in unconventional warfare, also known as asymmetric warfare, and bring their expertise around the world to help train local police and military forces. They support movements that the United States deems useful for its goals, and also offer diplomatic advice and support during American missions abroad. Most members are bilingual and college educated and receive further diplomatic and cultural training once they accept training.

The Green Berets also work on intelligence operations, ranging from reconnaissance to disinformation campaigns, and participate in psychological and counter-terrorism operations. They also provide humanitarian aid, putting their cultural background and language skills to use in communities around the world.

Becoming a member of the special forces is challenging. Historically, candidates needed at least three years of military service with an excellent record, although the Army today offers a special program that allows soldiers to enter training immediately after boot camp if they show potential. Prospective members must complete the Special Forces Evaluation and Selection Course, which includes a grueling training program, before moving on to the Special Forces Qualification Course, known as the Q Course. Soldiers who pass the Q Course are officially accepted as Green Berets.

The slang term “green beret” for a Special Forces member is a reference to the special headgear that Special Forces members are entitled to wear. Since 1961, Special Forces soldiers have been explicitly permitted to wear their distinctive berets, which visually distinguish them from other members of the military.
