Suzanne Somers is an American actress, author, and businesswoman, known for her roles in Three’s Company and Step by Step. Born Suzanne Marie Mahoney in San Bruno, California on October 16, 1946, Suzanne’s childhood was often violent and difficult. Her father, Frank, was allegedly a verbally and physically abusive alcoholic whose job was to load beer into train boxcars. Suzanne’s mother, Marion, cared for Suzanne and her three siblings. Suffering from dyslexia, Suzanne had problems as a student, but she was successful in the theater arts.

After winning a music scholarship to college and spending six months there, Suzanne became pregnant. The child’s father was Bruce Somers and she Suzanne married him in 1965 and named him after her son. Their marriage ended in 1968 after her husband discovered that Suzanne was having an affair with her former drama teacher.

Suzanne Somers left Three’s Company in 1981 after its fourth season due to a contract dispute. She had asked the American Broadcasting Company (ABC), the network that aired the show, for a significant raise, but she was denied. Somers filed a lawsuit against ABC for $2 million US dollars (USD) in damages, but she settled for $30,000 USD, her salary for one episode.

She continued to work in television and film, and became serious about health and wellness in the 1980s. Suzanne Somers is the author of many popular books on diet and fitness as well as being a spokesperson for fitness products such as the ThighMaster®. She underwent alternative cancer treatment herself after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001, although she underwent surgery to remove the cancer and she underwent radiation therapy.
