Terry Pratchett is a British science fiction and fantasy writer best known for his invention of the Discworld series, which has attracted a cult following. His writing style is thoughtful and witty and is almost always wrapped in comedy and satire. Readers often state that his books have a distinct “British humour” flavor and tend to explore a wide range of themes.

As creator of characters like Commander Sam Vimes, a poor cop who leads a police force full of dwarves, trolls and the occasional werewolf; the Patrician, official ruler of Ankh-Morpork and overseer of its many social subgroups such as the Thieves’ Guild and the Assassins’ Guild; and Rincewind, a modest dropout from Unseen University, a school of magic most fans consider Terry Pratchett to be a literary treasure.

In addition to the extensive Discworld books, Terry Pratchett is also the author of the Bromeliad Trilogy and the Johnny Maxwell Trilogy and has also collaborated on various adaptations of his work, some of which have become comedies, radio plays, video games, and even a comic book. The Wee Free Men, a Discworld novel, will be adapted into a film by director Sam Raimi.

While not as popular in the US as the other British fantasy export, JK Rowling, Terry Pratchett has nevertheless captured the imagination of a considerable number of readers. He has sold 50 million books worldwide and is the seventh most read non-American writer in the United States. He is also quite prolific; he publishes, on average, two books a year. His output totals over forty novels, and he still counts.

Terry Pratchett was first published at age 13 in a school magazine. At fifteen he commercially published the same story. He left school early and didn’t go to university; however, he has always received high grades in English and has even completed a short course in journalism. In addition, he has been the recipient of many honorary degrees, including honorary doctorates from leading British universities. He was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for contributions to literature in 1998.
